Parking in Alkmaar city center at APCOA
Alkmaar is a historic city in the North Holland province. Its beautiful medieval buildings, canalside houses and museums make it a top tourist destination—but Alkmaar is most famous for its weekly cheese market. Visitors from all over the world flock to the Waagplein to see local cheeses being weighed in the traditional ‘hand-clap’ fashion. Park at our Grote Kerk location to walk to the Alkmaar cheese market: it’s just 8 minutes away.
APCOA PARKING Grote Kerk: an ideal base for a day in Alkmaar!
Alkmaar is the location of nearly 400 rijksmonuments—sites and buildings of special national interest. One of these, the Grote Sint Laurenskerk, is 2 minutes from our Grote Kerk car park. Grote Sint Laurenskerk is open to tourists during the summer months. Its twin organs are the church’s biggest attractions—particularly the organ built into the western end, which is one of the most famous and awe-inspiring instruments in the world. So large that its casing is actually part of the architecture of the Grote Sint Laurenskerk, this organ is a must-see.
Alkmaar is also home to one of Holland’s oldest museums, the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar. Unusually, the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar is situated in one of the city’s newest buildings: following a refit and redesign, this venerable and culturally important collection now lives in a clean, bright space on Canadaplein. If you’d like to learn about the history of Alkmaar, the Museum is a 2-minute walk from our Grote Kerk location.
Even the shopping in Alkmaar is historic. Visit Het Schoenmakertje to shop and explore the network of canals and ancient buildings. Many shops are independent or traditional, and it is possible to buy everything from cheese and leather goods to boutique clothing. The shopping streets Langestraat and the Laat are just a few minutes walk from the car park.
